After years of labor, edits, re-edits, queries to agents, sitting on the hard drive gathering dust, more edits, test readers, more queries to agents, and encouragement from our editor, my brother and I have made our fantasy/steam punk novel Duck Blood Soup available on Kindle. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AGOISEU/ref=cm_sw_r_fa_dp_eZHVqb0DKR5T4
When I was developing the story, I wanted to have strong, smart female characters. I don’t know if I succeeded but I think I made a good effort. Since I’ve never been a teenage girl, or a woman in combat, I had to make some assumptions.
I also wanted different or expanded characteristics for the non-human characters. Creatures that drink blood in order to live who are also averse to killing, giants as artists and chefs, and so on.
From the blurb:
When Eizenfeng’s leading wizards combine science with magic, the world changes dramatically. Technological advancements, coupled with racial and economic tensions propel the country toward war with a longtime ally. Jeunelux is oblivious to the building turmoil; scorching days harvesting tomatoes and her annoying older brother are more pressing concerns.
Suddenly, strange dreams that haunt her nights become reality. Jeunelux, along with two other untrained and unlicensed teen wizards embark on a quest to save the girl’s father, rescue a giant, and prevent a war. The three friends must quickly hone their magical skills and take on responsibilities beyond their years to save innocent lives.
